DEGREES OF COMPARISON


         
         When we compare two and more persons or things we use Degrees of Comparison.
         
         இரண்டு அல்லது அதற்கு மேற்பட்ட பெருட்களை ஒப்பிடும்போது Degrees of comparison பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.

TYPES OF DEGREES OF COMPARISON:-

Degrees of comparison


  1. Positive Degree
  2. Comparative Degree
  3. Superlative Degree

1. POSITIVE DEGREE

            The positive degree of an adjective is the adjective in its ordinary form. It is used to denote the mere existence of some quality of what we speak about and is used when no comparison is made.
             ஒரு நபர் அல்லது ஒரு பொருளை பற்றி உள்ளது உள்ளவாறு சொல்லுதல்.    

E.g. :1. Naveen is as tall as Prakash.
             நவீன், பிரகாஷ் - ஐ போன்று உயரமானவன்.
         2. Koki is not so intelligent as Sangeetha.
            கோகிலா, சங்கீதாவை போன்று புத்திசாலி இல்லை.

2. COMPARATIVE DEGREE

                The comparative degree of an adjective denotes a higher degree of quality than the positive. It is used when two things are compared.
                இரு நபர்கள் அல்லது இரு பொருட்களை கூறி ஒன்றுடன் மற்றொன்றை ஒப்பிட்டு கூறுவது Comparative degree ஆகும்.

E.g. :1. Naveen is cleverer than Prakash.
             பிரகாஷ் - ஐ விட நவீன் புத்திசாலி.
         2. Kokila is not more intelligent than Sangeetha.
             கோகிலா, சங்கீதா விட புத்திசாலி இல்லை.

3. SUPERLATIVE DEGREE 

              The superlative degree of an adjective denotes the highest degree of quality. It is used when more than two things are compared. 

              ஒரு நபரை அல்லது பொருளை மட்டும் மற்றவர்கள் அல்லது மற்றவர்களிடம் இருந்து தனிமைப்படுத்தி உச்ச அளவில் கூறுதல்.


E.g. : 1. Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.
              எவரெஸ்ட் சிகரம் இந்த உலகத்தில் மிக உயர்ந்த சிகரம்.
          2. Sheela is the Tallest girl in her class.
              ஷீலா அவளுடைய வகுப்பறையில் மிக உயரமானவள்.

CONVERSION OF ADJECTIVES

             Most adjectives and adverbs can be turned into other forms of comparison in many ways.

             பெரும்பாலான Adjectives மற்றும் Adverbs பல வழிகளில் ஒப்பிடுவதற்கு பிற வழிகளில் மாற்றலாம்.

Type 1: Two Persons and Things  (Positive Type)

Positive : Subject  + verb + as + Positive Ajective + as + Object 
Example: Naveen is as tall as Prakash.

Comparative: Subject + Verb + Not + Comparative Adjective + Than + Object
Example: Prakash is not intelligent than Naveen. 

Negative Types

Positive : Subject + Verb + Not + So + Positive Adjective + as + Object
Example: Naveen is not so richest as Praveen.

Comparative: Subject + Verb + Comparative Adjective + Than + Object
Example: Praveen is richer than Naveen.   

Type 2: More than two persons or Things (No other....)

Positive: No other + Subject + Verb + So + Positive Adjective + As + Object
Example: No other student is so intelligent as Naveen.

Comparative: Subject + Verb + Comparative Adjective + Than + Any/all other + Object
Example: Naveen is more intelligent than any other Student.

Superlative: Subject + Verb + The + Superlative Adjective + Of+ all + Plural Noun.

Example: Naveen is the most intelligent of all students.


E.g: 1. No other student is so intelligent as Naveen. ( Positive Degree )

        2. Naveen is more intelligent than any other student. ( Comparative Degree )

        3. Naveen is the most intelligent of all students. ( Superlative degree ) 


Type 3: More than persons or Things ( Very few )


Positive: Very few + subject + Verb + as + positive Adjective + as + object
Example: Very few boys as tall as Prakash

Comparative: Subject + Verb + Comparative Adjective + Than + Most other + Object
Example: Prakash is taller than most other boys.

Superlative: Subject + Verb + One of + The + Superlative Adjective + Plural nouns (object)
Example: Prakash is one of the tallest boys.

E.g: 1. Very few boys as tall as Prakash ( Positive Degree )
        2. Prakash is taller than most other boys. ( Comparative degree )
        3. Prakash is one of the tallest boys. ( Superlative Degree )

Type 4: More than two persons or things ( Some.. ) 

Positive: Some + Plural Nouns + Verbs + At least + As + positive Adjective + as + object
Example: Some boys are at least as smart as Prakash.

Comparative: Subject + Verb + Not + Comparative Adjective  + Than + some other + Plural Nouns(object)
Example: Prakash is not the smartest than some other Boys.  

Superlative: Subject + verb + not + the + Superlative adjective + of all + Plural nouns.
Example: Prakash is not the smartest of all Boys. 

E.g: 1. Some boys are at least as smart as Prakash. ( Positive degree )
        2. Prakash is not the smartest than some as Prakash. ( Comparative Degree )
        3 Prakash is not the smartest of all Boys.   ( Superlative Degree )
